Paying for software doesn't always mean it's the best solution!

After reading this plurk (http://www.plurk.com/p/h6lm0), I got thinking. Free software is often overlooked/under publicised in the place of "industry standard" solutions or more widely recognised softwares. Why is that? Sometimes, the industry standard is un-affordable for the average user, or the learning curve is just too steep, or maybe the software is bloated beyond belief! (Microsoft Office for instance!)

So, what can we use when cash is a problem?!

1. Do you believe in seeing a rainbow after the rain?
Of course. It's one of Mother Nature's little treasures! I've even followed one to where it began/finished, I got within about 100 yards or so before it started to fade

2. If you could have a dream come true, what would it be?
Well, the pagan in me would want the world to be a better place, where everyone did their bit to look after The Great Earth Mother.

3. Do you believe in eternity love?
I'm not sure. I believe more in Soul Mates.

4. What feeling do you love most?
The happy feeling of being appreciated or respected

just saving a wikipedia link on databases

I know I could use some other new-fangled way of doing it, but this is quicker!

Getting a crucial gizmo usb stick to work in Ubuntu 7.10

This has bugged me all week. I plug in my usb stick and Ubuntu complains about the stick saying basically it can't mount it.

That all changed when I found a fix today! see here for the full info: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-mount/+bug/151025/commen...

Basically, you need to run gconf-editor and navigate to /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options, and then remove the "usefree" option from the list. Exit gconf-editor, and try hotplugging your device again.

That's it, it should work again!

Getting flock to work on Ubuntu

I've been playing with flock at home (on Vista64) and am enjoying the experience! It's nice that all the social stuff is there without having to test and install extensions in FireFox; it's a pity there isn't some way of testing extensions in a virtual browser on the web or something (now there's an idea that I would never have the time for!!!).

So, at this moment in time, there hasn't been much takeup from the distros to package Flock ;(

But wait, there's instructions on their site here:

Drupalcon Barcelona 2007

Wow, 3 people have signed up for my brainstorm session at drupalcon ( http://barcelona2007.drupalcon.org/node/700 ).
I'm just waiting on a group I want to start on http://groups.drupal.org then I can start getting my ideas down!

I do think drupal needs its' own booking system, I just need to work out whether it's feasible?!

hmmm.

Windows Vista woes

I upgraded my computer and stuck Windows Vista Ultimate oem on it. It took about 2 weeks of messing about to get it to a workable state, but it's took till this morning to work out I had a problem!
I occasionally get this problem where vista boots to a black desktop, but the mouse pointer is still viewable.
And I finally worked out this morning it's a problem with Aero (the thing that MS are using to 'sell' Vista). It seems Aero doesn't like my setup, despite having 4Gb RAM, 2x GeForce 8500GT cards in SLi mode.

Welcome to my blog!

I wonder if I could manage to find the time to keep this up-to-date?

I also wonder whether any of "the lads"(tm) will view the site again and want to join up?!

I also wonder if anyone else will read this, or if they can be bothered!
